LOCATION
The "Plaça de les Glòries" has been historically a very important point for the city since Ildefons Cerà made his Eixample, because it is the place where the three major streets of the Eixample (av.Diagonal, Gran via and av.Meridiana) converge. It is one of the entry points of the city and in the last years have been developed a number of important projects, including Els Encants, which have given a major boost to the area, turning it into one of the centers of Barcelona, just as Cerdà thought at the time.
The "Encants Vells" is one of the oldest markets in Europe, resulting of the merger of "Els encants" and "La Fira de Bellcaire". The first notice we have of the Encants refers to a medieval market held next to Barcelona's city walls, in the way of Rec, founded in 1375. It has had different locations in the city until 1928, on the occasion of the Universal Exposition and to provide a good image to tourism, it moved to the Plaça de les Glòries. The last location before the new project was two years after that, in 1931, when the market was moved to a location bounded by the square itself with other streets. Since September 2013 the market is located in the new location, and the project designed by b720 Fermín Vazquez Architects, consist on a huge canopy that covers the new flea market.
